Titre: Inconvenient liaisons. Navigating changing relations in Indonesia 1942-1945

The most tangible proof of friendly or intimate relations between Japanese military and local women was their offspring. Nevertheless, it took decades before their personal histories came out in the open. The dominant narrative of connections between occupier and occupied people focuses on a strong disapproval of the enemy. But, daily reality on the ground turned out to be much more complex. In this presentation, Eveline Buchheim will delve into a few examples of collaboration and examine how aspects of race, class, and gender influenced the judgment of collaboration or fraternization with the enemy.
